SFF Seattle Events List: March 2016

I apologize for the delay in this month’s list; I’ve been having some health issues that have knocked the stuffing out of my work schedule. Even with this late start, we have plenty of neat science fiction and fantasy events in Seattle this month, including a live soundtrack for The Dark Crystal and two very different versions of Alice in Wonderland—not to mention Norwescon, Sakura-Con, and the Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival.

One quick admin note before we get to the good stuff. Last month’s list was absurdly long, so I decided to exclude regular meetings for smaller groups—things like book clubs and crafting groups. If you’re curious, you can find a lot of these meetings on last month’s list.

As always, please check each event’s website to confirm the details. If you’d like to get future events lists, subscribe using the link to the right or follow me on Twitter.

Know of a SFF event that’s not on this list? Want to go to an event? Tell us about it in the comments!

SFF Seattle Events List
March 2016

Month-Long Events
Mar. 3–31
Alexander Keyes: “to: europa”
What: Art exhibit. “Ever feel overwhelmed by the monotony and pressures of housework, family, and employment? Artist Alexander Keyes does. For relief, he has adopted a perspective of the world built on speculation and fantasy. His installation, to: europa, encompasses an array of escape mechanisms constructed from the minutiae of domesticity. Keyes has imagined starscapes emerging from spilt house paint, arranged cereal boxes into maps of the solar system, and dreamt up rocket ships from cardboard awaiting recycling. Reclaiming his sense of self through these hidden wonders, he can be lost in the desire for an impossible flight from everyday life.”

In anticipation of the release of the fourth and final installment, we want to get readers excited all over again with this new, softcover collection containing the prologues from the three previously released volumes, plus the never-before-seen prologue from the fourth volume, in an all-new reading order. Great starting point for new readers. What It Is: Made to look like a boy, but built for battle, Jet Jones is a robot caught in the middle of an ongoing war. While trying to save countless lives, Jet discovers there is more to him than he could have imagined. His experiences in the war set him on a journey to learn what it means to be both hero and human. The Sprocket Society presents Saturday Secret Matinees
What: “Escape the winter doldrums at a good old-fashioned Saturday matinee, with a thrilling serial episode and a classic feature film — all on glorious 16mm! SPY SMASHER (1942), considered the best serial ever made, is presented complete in 12 weekly episodes. The feature films are a secret, but follow monthly themes. March: Fantasy & Adventure! In SPY SMASHER, a freelance agent assumes a secret identity to fight a series of Nazi plots led by a master spy known only as The Mask. Based on a popular comic book of the time, filming began just two weeks after Pearl Harbor — and you can feel it. With breakneck pacing, surprising plot twists, and some of the best action scenes of the decade, legendary serial director William Witney outdid himself and made a finely-honed cliffhanger that remains in a class by itself.”
